Patrick Jouin
"Rencontre by Patrick Jouin" is a reinterpretation of ornamentation.
The theme of ornamentation is back in the spotlight with the advent of new machining techniques. Patrick Jouin reinvents the Marotte sculpted panels and plays with all the possibilities afforded by the machine. Besides focusing exclusively on materials and how to shape them, Patrick Jouin also works on shaping light as an entity in its own right.
The pattern then becomes dynamic and hinges on lighting, the movement of people in the space, and the shadows created, making it versatile, vibrant, and alive.
The aesthetic outcome of the sculpted panels of the RENCONTRE collection is governed by the path, angle and rotation speed of the specially-designed machining tools. The materials are therefore meticulously sculpted; the tool leaves a trace, an imprint made of hollow and solid spaces, shadows and light, transforming the untreated panel and revealing a pattern or a drawing inside the material.
In the era of digital sculpture, Patrick Jouin has designed for Marotte a series of 16 models of panels for wall covering, or furniture components for all types of projects (hotels, restaurants, stores, offices, residential, ...). The 16 models, divided into 6 categories, are available in 8 carefully curated colors.
The career of Patrick Jouin, and his design agency, Patrick Jouin ID, has been consecrated by a monographic exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2009 and honoured by the Compasso d'Oro prize for the Pasta Pot in 2011. Several of his creations have entered the permanent collections of museums around the world, notably the "Solid" collection at the MOMA, which in 2004 was the first series of 1:1 furniture made using 3D printing technologies.
